After Virgil Abloh died in 2021, his collaborative Air Jordan 2s marked the beginning of the silhouette’s comeback. To top it all off, Union LA’s two-part effort to revive the original “Chicago” colorway is just around the corner. It was revealed today that the Jordan Brand would also be working with pop-surrealist artist Nina Chanel Abney, whose interpretation of MJ’s second signature is straight out of the uncanny valley.
Animation and lifelike robots fall into the “uncanny valley” because the slight difference in appearance between the two is enough to elicit a shaky feeling in those unfamiliar with such things. This can be seen in Abney’s shoe design, which is reminiscent of the original while also being distinctive.
For starters, the collar’s prominence is accentuated by the absence of noticeable stitching or trims. Even the suede heel tab, which reveals much more than previous offerings, is a little scary. Everything about this shoe screams “unfinished”: the heel has no color blocking, no snakeskin-textured panel next to it, and the perforations on the toe cap are abruptly cut off right where they start on the lace unit, giving it an oddly plain look.
We’ll update you with more information about the Nina Chanel Abney x Air Jordan 2.
