With Chris Gibbs and the Union Los Angeles, NIKE, Inc. fans have grown fond of the team in recent years. To commemorate its 50th anniversary, Nike recently released two new colorways of its Cortez shoe on the West Coast.
The upcoming collaboration reimagines the iconic silhouette for the next 50 years, inspired by LA’s rich history and cultural diversity. As a part of Swoosh’s “Move to Zero” initiative, Crater Foam cushioning and Nike Grind traction are added to the upper and midsole of the shoe. “City of Angels” sneakers made from recycled materials perfectly fit the city’s recent climate change. As if to evoke the concrete structures that dot Los Angeles, Union LA’s third Cortez has been given a muted grey hue.
However, the base textile layer is not the only place where the pops of blue, pink, and yellow can be found; suede panels also line the tongue, profiles, and spine. Besides the cork sock liners, the Gibbs-led team stamps its name on the lateral quarter panel, tongue label, heel, and underside of the tongue. Cortez ’72” is printed on each pair of lacy dubraes in honor of the model’s 1972 debut. Lastly, the California-based institution reimagines its famous “KNOW THE LEDGE” shoe box.
As of this writing, no official launch details for Union LA x Nike Cortez Blue Fury have been made public, but that could change before the summer ends. In the meantime, look at these official photos of the duo.
