Despite the fact that Dia de Los Muertos celebrations have ended for the year in 2021, the release of commemorative footwear continues. It’s likely that the Nike Air Max 90 “Day of the Dead” release has been delayed because of COVID, but the commemorative sneakers are still expected to hit select global markets later this month.
Refined black, muted green, and earth browns anchor the 2021 Day of the Dead Air Max 90 in stark contrast to last year’s over-the-top vibrancy. Nonetheless, it’s a holiday celebration; it’s just done in a different way this time. The black suede and brown velour lining honors Mexican traditions of making the trip to Mictlán, with a green textile Swoosh and bright white midsoles for good measure. They’re mostly hairless, but the faux fur texture is said to be inspired by the Xoloescuincle, a guide animal you meet along the way, and the forefoot and heel feature embroidered skeleton designs to further amplify the Dia de Los Muertos vibe.
The official release date of November 17 has been listed on Nike Mexico’s website, but a wider global rollout has not yet been announced. Until further information is released, check out the official images of the pair below.
