When South Park premiered in 1997, it began a slew of memorable television moments. For the past few years, Adidas has collaborated with the ever-controversial cartoon to bring some of its characters and moments to the world of sneakers. AWESOM-influence O’s can be seen on a recent Adidas Forum Low.
Eric Cartman came up with the idea for AWESOM-O, a robot disguise (or “computerized automotron”), to befriend Butters to trick him into spilling secrets that could later be used to make fun of him in episode five of season eight (April 14, 2004). As the episode progresses, Butters does not suspect a thing. Still, both Hollywood executives and military personnel are interested in Cartman’s creation for varying reasons: the former seeks AWESOM-assistance O’s in developing their next hit movie, while the latter believes Mr. 4000 can be reprogrammed to be used as a secret weapon. The Adidas Originals silhouette inspired by Cartman’s costume is clad in a brown identical to the cardboard the eight-year-old uses; however, the base of the tongue has purple, yellow, and red accents that nod to some of AWESOM-O details. O’s as well as the laces and the silver heel overlay. Traditional branding is replaced with graphics of the automotron’s face and the strap has “A.W.E.S.O.M.-O” text on it. Still, the tongue and accompanying lockdown strap give the most direct nod to the dubious character. Shoeboxes come in a limited-edition box depicting the robot and Professor Chaos with the town of South Park looming over them.
The shoes will be available on adidas.com on March 21st for USD 110 each, as shown in the images below.
